Mundane Poker Goes On...
Wednesday, 9 November 2005 11:02I haven't stopped playing poker. I play somewhat regularly online, and even earned enough in recent weeks to reimburse my backer with all of the profit promised by our deal. I'm playing on my own dime, keeping 100% of my winnings again. It looks as if I'll have another $7-$10k year. I'm a profitable player, but when I note that my online stats say I'm earning a mere .85 BB/hour in $5/$10 limit HE, I feel my game is probably in a rut.
I miss live poker. My job keeps me from it most of the time; I get a spare hour or two while watching television (yes, part of my bad EV is probably because I play while watching television), and put some hours in online. Not only that, but when I went looking for a live game in NYC a few weekends ago, I found out that the busts that had (apparently) begun because a baseball player had made high profile visits had spread to such an extent that nearly every club I knew (which numbered in the double digits) had either been shut down due to police raids, or was on multi-week hiatus in fear of raids.
I can't imagine having to hop a Greyhound or Amtrak to play poker again. I used to do it in Boston, but the time to Foxwoods and Atlantic City (which are nearly equidistant from NYC) is such that single day trips aren't terribly feasible, especially with my job schedule.
I plan to go searching for clubs again this Friday. I hope some have reopened. The constant pursuit of finding a poker games makes me long for the time, before I lived in NYC, of the Mayfair Club, when a poker club could actual stay open for multiple years at a time.
