There is actually a book out this year that I haven't read yet that
talks about how to file your poker as a business. I am not qualified to
give you any tax advice, nor do I have any training in it, but I am
believer in the idea that the rules should be written such that any
taxpayer can understand them on their own.
I therefore read every single publication that the IRS produced on doing a Schedule C, for a sole proprietorship. I'd done this before anyway for consulting work related to my “real career”. As I read the rules, if you operate a sole proprietorship business in a professional manner with the goal of making money to help support yourself, you can file the activity as a Schedule C business.
Anyway, I will be reading that book this winter, and will post a review of it when I do, in my continuing goal to convince everyone to do the right thing and pay their taxes.
